Cut lines with a utility knife before attacking with a jigsaw<\/h4>\n

If you are building a project in accordance with\u00a0the book “Build\u00a0A\u00a0Beautiful Wooden Stand-Up Paddleboard\u00a0(and a really cool paddle, too)<\/strong><\/a>” or the book “How To Build The World’s Most Incredible Wooden Surfboard<\/strong><\/a>” and obtained a corresponding template file, you will likely encounter a slight difficulty when cutting\u00a0the necessary shapes\u00a0from paper-covered wood.<\/p>\n

A band saw is the best tool for cutting out the template shapes.<\/p><\/div>\n

Both books describe the process in detail and note that, whenever possible, a band saw should be employed to cut the outlines, if the paper template has been adhered to wood. This is because the up and down motion of a jigsaw blade will\u00a0rip away the paper shapes before the task can be completed properly.<\/p>\n

“When all paper shapes have been glued to wood,\u00a0each shape will need to be cut out with a band saw,”\u00a0reads chapter 3 (page 28) of “Stand-Up Paddleboard. “A\u00a0jigsaw may be used instead, but a band saw does a far\u00a0better job, cutting much more cleanly because the blade\u00a0is thinner and only travels in one direction. The latter\u00a0trait means almost no tear-out of the wood or shredding\u00a0of the paper.”<\/p>\n

A band saw’s limited open arm frame prohibits some cuts from being completed at the necessary angle.<\/p><\/div>\n

Unfortunately, however, there are some cuts along the stringer and at the center of the longer ribs that\u00a0cannot be done with a band saw.\u00a0 \u00a0The length of these pieces will extend beyond the open frame of the band saw.\u00a0 Thus the blade will be unable to saw at a 90-degree angle, as needed for the template’s marked slots.<\/p>\n

This trouble can be avoided in one of two ways:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0 If you have a scroll saw that allows positioning of the blade\u00a0with its teeth facing\u00a0outward\u2014a\u00a0quarter turn\u2014the wood piece can be pushed straight toward the machine.\u00a0 This will allow the correct angle of cut, but a scroll saw doesn’t actually scroll.\u00a0 The blade\u00a0goes up and down.\u00a0 So, prepare the paper template by first using a utility knife to\u00a0slice\u00a0the paper along the line to be cut.\u00a0 This will allow the scroll saw blade to pump along the line without grabbing the portion that needs to remain attached to the wood.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0 If a scroll saw is absent from your shop or tool list, a jigsaw may be used\u00a0after the same prep\u00a0of the mounted paper template.<\/p>\n

If\u00a0either of these methods is followed, be sure to cut slowly and carefully.<\/p>\n

Cutting the paper first with a utility knife will allow a scroll saw or jigsaw to make a clean removal of the wood piece.<\/p><\/div>\n
