Razzle dazzle planned for a raffle

Seawood Longboards has been commissioned by a nonprofit organization to build a cruiser skateboard to be raffled to a lucky attendee of an upcoming festival in Southern California. Seawood Longboards is thrilled to be handcrafting a customized one-of-a-kind skateboard that will provide years of pleasure for someone while also helping the group achieve its benevolent goals.  Unfortunately, we are unable to make any more mention of the 501(c)(3) or its scheduled event. The project is planned as a surprise, so further details will have to be provided in the future, after the organization’s leadership makes the appropriate announcements. Stay...

I had a swale childhood

My mind overflows with memories of skimboarding. When I was a runt—growing up in South Florida—a mediocre rain shower would blanket many roadways and swell beyond the bounds of strategically placed swales. If you are unfamiliar with the term “swale,” it is a strip of land between homes or office buildings and the streets that provide their addresses. The beauty of a soaked swale was that it usually possessed a grass-covered impact zone to soften the slam of a skimboarder taking a tumble. Avenues of asphalt lurking beneath a thin sheet of H2O easily could shred skin or snap...

Uh, oh… something’s sup!

A new project has been launched.  The skeleton of something cool has been completed and a handle made and attached.  Any guess on what it will be?  It may be easy to figure out, but we will refrain from specifically identifying it at this time.  We will keep working at it and share pix as it continues to take shape.  We hope you will follow along and witness the...

Pour your heart out, laminators

It’s been too long. I’m really looking forward to pouring a glob of that blue-tinted, syrup-thick liquid onto a crisscrossing fabric and watching it all disappear as I spread the epoxy resin to the far corners of the fiberglass cloth. I have a project; so it’s just a matter of weeks before I’ll get some satisfaction. Although it won’t be a complete wave rider, as detailed in the book, “How To Build The World’s Most Incredible Wooden Surfboard,” there will be many similarities. So, all the tips found there for glassing will apply. Some are obvious: 1) Make sure the surface area...

Marching to a different wood

Project hunting is rewarding.  Every time I find something good, the benefits begin to gather. I stumbled onto the cajon goal when I was searching for a used (cheap) conga drum.  I then wondered how difficult it would be to build my own. That took me to YouTube.com.  My suspicions were confirmed about turning a large cylinder and stretching an animal skin or sheet of vinyl over it.   Time-consuming, tool-needing and expensive were the descriptions that came to mind. Along the way, however, images, advertisements and video clips flashed before my eyes and teased about the simplicity of constructing...
